How to apply


Thank you for your interest. The application period for the 2019 workshop is now closed. Registration for the one-day kick-off symposium on July 29 is open and may be completed here.

Doctoral students from U.S. colleges and universities who have completed their comprehensive exams are eligible to apply.

International students who currently are, or are planning to be, already in the United States prior to the course may apply. International travel arrangements must be made by the student.

Please note, only applications from external candidates will be considered. Graduate students in VARI labs should contact Aubrie Bruinsma for more information.

There is no cost to apply. Students selected to attend the course will receive scholarships that cover course costs, transportation and housing.

How to apply
Interested students should submit the following materials as one PDF file to Van Andel Research Institute no later than May 1, 2019. The application period is now open:

  • CV
  • One-paragraph statement of interest including area of study
  • Poster abstract
  • Letter of recommendation from Ph.D. advisor, which must be received by May 1. This can be included as the fourth document in the PDF submission or can be emailed by the advisor separately to

Please name the PDF with your last name and first name followed by “Epigenomics”, separated by underscores (i.e., Smith_Kate_Epigenomics). Materials will be reviewed by the course committee, which will select 12-15 applicants for admission into the program. Students will be notified in late May.
